Chana (chickpeas) contain a significant amount of fibre and lowers the choloestrol level in the body and keep the heart healthy. Chana is made every now and then in Indian homes. Some love it with puri and some have it with plain rice. Let's make some Chana masala which is going to be a little spicy with the flavours of peppers and red chillies.
Ingredients
White Chana - 500 gms(soaked for 3-4 hours)
Onions - 3 large ( finely chopped)
Garlic ginger paste - 2 tsp
Bay leaves - 2
Cloves 2-3
Pepper ground 1 tsp
Cumin powder 1tsp
Red chilli powder 1 tsp
Turmeric powder 1 tsp
Salt to taste
Corainder powder
Corainder leaves to garnish
Tamarind pulp 2 tsp
Chana masala 1 tsp
Oil 2-3 tsp
Method
Boil the chana with enough water in a pressure cooker for about 10 minutes. Keep aside.
Meanwhile heat oil in a wok . Add the bay leaves and cloves for a minute. Saute the onions till brown. Add the garlic ginger paste and saute till brown. Add salt, turmeric, corainder, cumin powder and pepper, add about 1/4 cup of water and let the masala infuse to give a distinct flavour.
Now, Add the Chana masala and the tamarind paste and mix well. Add the boiled Chanas and 2 cups of water and cook for another 15 minutes till the gravy has a nice thick texture. Garnish with garam masala and green corainder and serve hot with rice or chappati.
* Top it with some sliced onions/tomatoes and green chillies.
